What is the recovery process after umbilical hernia surgery?

Depending on the type of surgery, there are different ways for hernias to heal. For instance, open-type surgeries take longer to heal, while closed-type surgeries take less time.

Closed Umbilical Hernia Surgery

No matter how big or small the hernia is, the first step in a closed surgery is to make three small cuts. Through these three small cuts, air is pumped into the surgical site, and weak spots, holes, and openings are easily closed with self-adjusting screws. The surgery only takes a short amount of time, which makes it easier on the heart. The recovery time will also be short, since there is a very low chance of infection or wound. No matter how big or small the hernia is, the patient will be able to leave the hospital in one day, heal in up to two weeks, and go back to his old life. For example, they will be able to carry loads, work out, and do their physical work at the same speed. Since the full type of treatment is used, there is almost no chance that the hernia will happen again.

Open Umbilical Hernia Surgery

There are two types of open surgeries: those that are done above or below the muscle. Since surgery above the muscle will always cause an infection, it can only be used for very small hernias. Even though it will not be a big deal for very small hernias, there is still some risk for them.

Small hernias can be fixed with either open or closed surgery, so it is not wrong to choose open surgery. Only small hernias that happen after surgery can be fixed with closed-type surgery.

Most of the time, sub-muscular surgeries are done during open surgeries. Since they are safer than surgeries that go over the muscles, these are the best mains. The length of the cuts gets longer as the hernia gets bigger. This also makes it harder to get better. In other words, someone who has had an open surgery stays in the hospital for an average of 3 days and needs 4–5 weeks to fully heal and get back to his old life.

Even though it costs more, closed surgery is better because it protects against heart disease and makes healing faster and more certain. It is healthier in every way and has a high success rate, especially for hernias that form in the area of the operation. Because a hernia could form along the line where the surgery was done.

People who have had surgery should pay attention to a few things after they get out of the hospital. For example, daily physical activities can be done without too many restrictions, and painkillers can be taken only when pain is felt and not in more than a certain amount. Aside from this, it is possible to get back to a normal level of nutrition, but if this level is higher than normal, a doctor should be consulted.

The healing process will go faster if you walk around and drink a lot of fluids in the first 48 hours. Besides that, there are some things that you should never do. For instance, it should never be lifted with a lot of force. When taking prescription painkillers for the first time, it is important not to take too much. If you can, you should feed it according to the diet list you got from the doctor, and you should avoid at all costs foods that will make it have trouble going to the bathroom.

After an operation, it is normal for the area that was worked on to be red and swollen, hurt, tender, and have some small bruises around the wound. If these symptoms get worse than usual, you should see a doctor. You do not have anything to worry about because of them.

But going back to the old times should not be done all at once. For example, it is a good idea to wait 1–1.5 weeks after surgery. Hamstrings can be caused by sitting still for too long, so it is important to do some exercises, but not too many. For example, you should not take long walks; they should be short, and you should never run or lift weights on them.

After surgery, it is normal to feel some pain, but if it gets too bad, it is also a good idea to see a doctor. Dressings should not be stopped in the middle.
